This 7,000 square foot addition to the H.O. Brittingham Elementary School houses a new
Gymnasium, equipment storage, Physical Education Office, Art and Music Classrooms and a
new canopied entrance.
The original school, which
was designed in the 1960's, reflects the architecture of the time. Brick construction,
long, low walls and flat roofs presented a challenge to unify the new to the old. This new
design extended the existing façade materials, height and details into the new addition,
aesthetically blending the structures together. This allowed for the creation of a new
image and form. The elaborate gable end and upper Gymnasium walls stem from a detail on
the original building.
The interiors are
enlivened by the use of color, light and materials. Vibrant yellow washes the north-facing
corridor skylight wells with continuous warmth and life. High clerestory windows in the
Gymnasium reduce the need for artificial light, yet highlight the contrast of materials
between glazed and painted masonry, wood paneling and exposed painted steel. The Art and
Music Classrooms each utilize a different accent color against those commonly shared,
giving each room distinction and character. |
